Social Media & Web 2.0 Tools

"Teachers need to integrate technology seamlessly into the curriculum instead of viewing it as an add-on, an afterthought or an event." -- Heidi Hayes Jacobs, Educational Consultant, Curriculum Designers,

Printerest
Printerest allows you to browse pinboards created by other people and to discover new things and get inspiration from other people who share your interest.

The form 3 Visual Arts class consisting of 15 students (9 girls and 6 boys) age ranging from 14 – 16 years. Students would design cushions for the living room using stencil printing technique based on the theme: Flowers in the Bloom

 .

Students would use printerest as a tool wish assist with their designs of inspiration and organize creative ideas to enhance their work. It would allow them to get crafty in different ways, making their work attractive which helps develop confidence in themselves.

Students were unable to access devices causing the task on hand to be challenging, it hindered the students from participating and researching their designs effectively was troublesome.

Voice Thread
Voice Thread has been a solid lesson-planning standby tool for some time. It's a collaborative, multimedia slide show that allows students to comment on images, documents and videos through text, video and audio files. It's an easy way to differentiate instruction while providing choices to "show" learning, engage in conversation, and think openly and critically about content.

Form 5 Visual Arts class consisting of 12 students (8 girls and 4 boys) age ranging from 15 – 18 years. Students would critique their own piece and the pieces for the other students. They would give details on how each piece affect their thought and feelings based on the designs shown.

With the use of voice thread, students would be asked to upload their pieces of work along with their own critique. This would allow students and outside professionals to critique each piece of work through text and audio file which allows for future reference. Based on comments and ideas given students would be allowed to make necessary changes and make improvement on their piece then later repost. This is a very good tool for students to use to assist them with their journal entries.

Sometimes challenges are faced based on criticism, they may become offensive causing them to develop a negative mindset on their work, lowering their self esteem and may results in the students questioning themselves and potential. Also they may become overwhelmed by the amount of opinions and thought being shared.

 Virtual Fieldtrip
You look outside the classroom window and see yet another in a long string of gloomy days. Inside the classroom, restless students seem mired in malaise. It must be time for a field trip! No money, you say, for buses or admission fees? No time for travel? Then why not a virtual field trip? The Web provides the resources; you provide the fun. Every day is a beautiful day for a virtual field trip!

During a classroom virtual field trip, students can explore places across the high seas, states across our country, and many nearby or far away people, places, and things. This is an opportunity to see and experience the world without ever leaving the classroom. The virtual field trip is cost effective to schools
.
The form 3 Visual Arts class consisting of 16 students (10 girls and 6 boys) age ranging from   14 – 16 years will be asked to create a piece based on the theme: Blooming Coral Reef. Students must use a variety of textile and manipulative techniques to develop the piece, piece should display al least three elements of the coral reef.

Students will be transported through virtual field trip, studying the elements associated with the theme and create their design. They would have the opportunity to view actual coral reefs at work capturing their attention through its movements. During this trip, students would have close up views and engage themselves in the amazing creatures that inhabit the coral reef. This allows students to see and explore the world without leaving the classroom.

Finding an appropriate and non-lengthy video was a challenge, which would engage and effectively impact their creativity. Students are easily bored, so it is imperative to keep their interest alive with a much shorter video.
